Getting involved in politics at any level is a costly business. A survey of parliamentary candidates discovered the average personal cost was over £11,000 across all seats and that rises substantially for those looking to fight marginal seats. With women earning nearly 10% less than men, the challenge to take part is harder. For women of colour, those who are disabled and those with children and caring responsibilities their earning potential impacts even harder. There is not a financial level playing field for women entering into politics and for many, the costs will be prohibitive and they rule themselves out.
We want to see better support for women choosing to stand whether that be bursaries, help with childcare costs and flexibility in the selection process so extra responsibilities are taken into account. Parliament, and our other political institutions, will never be truly representative if those who struggle financially are not taking part.
