Centenary Action’s next event will be in the House of Commons, where we will celebrate the work of women MPs and consider next steps for gender equality. We will hear from new women MPs about their experiences and share details of our #Mission2028 campaign. It will be an opportunity for you to network with MPs and other women’s organisations as well as each other.
At this year’s General Election, the UK Parliament reached a historic milestone with 40% of MPs now being women. A total of 263 female MPs were elected, a significant increase from 220 in 2019, with almost half of these women new to the Commons. This achievement marks the first time in parliamentary history that women could theoretically fill the entire House of Commons chamber, 106 years after they were first allowed to stand as MPs.
This progress is welcome but it’s not enough if we are going to get to a gender equal Parliament by 2028. The UK currently ranks 26th in international standings for women’s representation in national parliaments. We need to keep campaigning to ensure that progress towards equal representation is maintained, equality becomes fully embedded across our institutions and policy and that we don’t go backwards.
